How To Clean Your Computer Keyboard Safely

Have you looked at your keyboard lately? I know that I hadn’t until tonight. It was gross! I am embarrassed to show you all these photos, but maybe this tutorial will help you get your keyboard looking new again. Here is how to clean your computer keyboard safely. Now, keyboards can’t exactly get washed or wet, (we learned that the hard way with our mouse scroll bar and rubbing alcohol.. RIP little mouse). So how did I clean it? I cleaned it with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. The cool thing is, I bought this keyboard from the local University Surplus Sale, so this keyboard looks newer than when I bought it. Look at all the college student fingerprints that I was able to wipe away.

To clean your computer keyboard, you will need:

Simply take the corner of the Magic Eraser and rub gently. As soon as the key is clean move to the next to avoid over-scrubbing. You will notice little dust bits from the eraser, use the Air Duster to blow it away to avoid the dust from getting into the keyboard.

Do you have any other amazing uses for a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser?

  3. This is gonna sound funny……but I actually keep 2 keyboards on hand…….every 6 months I throw the keyboard through the dishwasher……..no heat……then let air dry over night (or a couple days……really don’t matter……you get a spare one lol)…..they always come out sparkling clean, and never an issue……..seriously, I was a naysayer……til I tried it! I was like WTF? electronics and water don’t mix! Cause yea, you throw the whole thing in there, cord and all…..the biggest thing is make sure it’s completely dried out before plugging it back in and using it 😉

Then again, I got a cheapo 10$ keyboard from big lots……..the pictured keyboard looks like an Apple product 😉 Don’t think I’d go there…..with that hahaha

    1. I have heard that you can do that. I actually watched a youtube of someone doing it with their Apple keyboard but they never showed the after:) Wonder if it worked. Thanks for commenting Adam.

  7. Keys are sticking badly on both my keyboards. Would like to know how to clean a keyboard without tossing into dishwasher.

Just found your site, (and I will be back !) Wanted to say that just because the keyboard is “black” doesn’t mean it “ain’t DIRTY”. The eraser worked wonderfully on my black on black laptop keyboard. Another hint; it cleans the gunk off the white parts of those “expensive” shoes with neon colors, that are all the rage. . . . . . . . . . “D”

  9. I also attempted to clean a keyboard in the dishwasher. Heard it on a radio program. What a disaster. My husband purchased a new one at best buy and blew my cover at the register. Gave the best buy associates a good laugh.

  10. Adam is correct. You CAN wash your keyboard in a dishwasher.

I know it sound unorthodox to place electronics into a deep washing cycle, but it works great!

The most important notes he made that will determine your results. No heated drying and waiting sufficient time for it to completely dry! Do those few things and your keyboard will be brand new again! If you veer from those two simple steps, you keyboard won’t work again.

The keyboard doesn’t have a stored charge (unless it’s wireless, be sure to remove batteries), so submerging, scrubbing the electronic device is fine. The circuit board needs to full dry however before plugging it back in (electrified). If it is still wet, it will shortcurcuit and fry something. If it’s completely dry, it will function like normal!

I have done this MANY times without throwing a keyboard away. Do it this way and under key grim or stickiness goes away. While the eraser might work, it’s for topographical cleaning only.
